MT4 Setup Guide

How to Install an EA on MT4 (Step by Step Guide for 2025)

A practical, beginner-friendly walkthrough to copy, attach and run an Expert Advisor on MT4 without missing important steps.

If you are new to MT4 Expert Advisors, installing the EA can feel more complicated than it really is. The good news: once you have done it once or twice, it becomes a simple routine that takes less than a minute.

In this guide we will walk through the full process of installing an EA on MetaTrader 4, attaching it to the right charts, enabling automated trading, and testing safely before you risk real money.

If you are completely new to trading robots, it helps to first read the Beginner's Guide to MT4 Expert Advisors. After installation, you can also learn how to test an MT4 EA from demo to live and how to backtest a Forex EA the correct way so you connect this setup guide with proper testing and risk management.

1. What you need before you start

Before installing any EA on MT4, make sure you have:

  • An MT4 trading account with your broker (login details ready).
  • The MT4 platform installed on your PC or VPS.
  • The EA file from the developer (usually a .ex4 or .mq4 file).
  • If the EA is licensed (like SmartEdge EA), your license key or activation details.

It is also a good idea to have a separate demo account or a small live account for testing, instead of installing straight on your main capital. If you plan to keep the EA running 24/5, consider using a dedicated VPS; our Best VPS for MT4 EAs (2025 Guide) explains realistic VPS specs and how many MT4 terminals you can run.

2. Where to copy the EA file in MT4

MT4 has a special folder for Expert Advisors. You do not just drop the file on the desktop or inside Program Files. Follow these steps:

  1. Open MT4.
  2. Click on File in the top menu.
  3. Click Open Data Folder.
  4. In the window that opens, double click on the MQL4 folder.
  5. Double click on the Experts folder.
  6. Copy or drag your EA file (for example, SmartEdgeEA.ex4) into this Experts folder.

Once the file is in the Experts folder, close the window. You do not need to move any other files unless the developer specifically gave you additional indicators or libraries.

3. Restart MT4 and find the EA in the Navigator

MT4 only scans for new EAs when it starts, so after copying the file:

  1. Close MT4 completely.
  2. Open MT4 again.
  3. On the left side, open the Navigator window (press Ctrl+N if it is hidden).
  4. Under the Expert Advisors section, you should now see the EA name in the list.

If you do not see the EA, right click on Expert Advisors in the Navigator and click Refresh. If it still does not show, the file is likely in the wrong folder, or the file is corrupted.

4. Attach the EA to the correct chart

An EA needs a chart to run on. Some EAs trade only one symbol, others (like multi-currency EAs) can trade many pairs but still require one or more charts to stay attached.

To attach the EA:

  1. Open a chart for the symbol and timeframe the EA expects. For example, EURUSD H1.
  2. In the Navigator, under Expert Advisors, find your EA.
  3. Drag the EA onto the chart, or right click on the EA name and choose Attach to a chart.
  4. A settings window will appear (Inputs and Common tabs).

In that window you can adjust external parameters such as risk, lot size, symbols to trade, trading hours, or license key depending on how the EA is designed.

5. Enable automated trading (very important)

In MT4 there is a global switch that controls whether any EA can trade. Even if an EA is attached, it will do nothing if automated trading is disabled.

  1. In the top toolbar, click the AutoTrading or Algo Trading button so it turns green.
  2. On the chart where the EA is attached, check the top right corner of the chart.
  3. If you see a smiley face icon next to the EA name, it is enabled. A sad or neutral face means trading is blocked.

You can always disable trading quickly by clicking the same AutoTrading button again. This is useful if you need to pause the EA during news events or when you are changing settings.

6. Check the EA inputs and common mistakes

When you attach an EA, you will see an Inputs tab where you can change parameters. It is easy to make a mistake here, so move slowly and double check values.

Typical things to review:

  • Risk or lot size settings are not too aggressive.
  • Symbol names match your broker symbols (for example, EURUSD vs EURUSD.m).
  • Trading hours and days settings are correct.
  • License key or email is entered exactly as provided.

If the EA has a setting for demo mode or low risk mode, it is a good idea to start there before increasing risk.

7. How to test an EA safely after installation

Installing the EA is only the first step. Before you trust it with serious money, you should watch how it behaves.

Good first steps after installation:

  • Run the EA on a demo account for a few days or weeks.
  • Use a small live account if you want to see real execution, but keep position sizes very low.
  • Compare trade behavior to the developer's performance page or Myfxbook, if available.
  • Check the Experts and Journal tabs in MT4 for error messages or warnings.

If you see a lot of errors in the Journal (for example "trade context busy", "not enough money", "invalid stops"), fix those before increasing risk. For a deeper process around safe testing, see How to Test MT4 EAs from Demo to Live and our guide on how to read Myfxbook for MT4 EAs.

8. Where SmartEdge EA fits into this process

SmartEdge EA follows the same basic installation flow as any MT4 EA: copy to the Experts folder, restart MT4, attach to charts, and enable AutoTrading. The main difference is that SmartEdge EA is designed for multi-currency trading and disciplined risk, not single pair gambling or martingale.

If you decide to test SmartEdge EA, you can start here:

9. Final checklist before going live

Before you run any EA on a serious live account, make sure that:

  • You understand the strategy basics (trend following, grid, mean reversion, etc.).
  • You are comfortable with the historical drawdown shown by the developer.
  • You know how to close trades manually if needed.
  • You know how to stop the EA quickly if something looks wrong.
  • You have tested with smaller risk first.

EAs are powerful tools, but they are not magic. The goal is to use them as disciplined, rules-based engines that support your long term trading plan, not as a shortcut to instant profits.

Frequently asked questions

In MT4, click File > Open Data Folder, then open the MQL4 folder and the Experts subfolder. Copy your EA file (.ex4 or .mq4) into this Experts folder, close the window and restart MT4. The EA should then appear under Expert Advisors in the Navigator.

The usual reasons are that AutoTrading (or Algo Trading) is turned off, the EA is attached to the wrong chart or timeframe, or there are configuration errors. Make sure the AutoTrading button is green, the chart shows a smiley face icon next to the EA name, and check the Experts and Journal tabs for any error messages about symbol names, lot sizes, stops or licensing.

You can run an EA on your own computer, but a VPS is strongly recommended if you want your EA to stay online 24 hours a day while the market is open. A VPS reduces the risk of power cuts, home internet outages and random restarts interrupting your trading. For realistic VPS profiles and specs, see the Best VPS for MT4 EAs (2025 Guide).

No. MT4 mobile apps on Android and iOS cannot run Expert Advisors. EAs only work on the Windows desktop version of MT4. You can run MT4 with your EA on a PC or VPS and then use your phone just to monitor the account or receive alerts.

The safest path is to start on a demo account or a very small live account with low risk. Let the EA run for a while, monitor the trades it takes, and compare its behaviour to the developer's performance or Myfxbook page. Only increase lot sizes once you are comfortable with the drawdowns and how the EA behaves in different market conditions.
